Wellbeing as the Foundation of Leadership (A Conversation Worth Revisiting)
Subscribe
As we begin a new year, many leaders feel pressure to set goals, refine strategies, and improve performance. But before any of that, there’s a deeper and more foundational question worth asking: What does well-being mean for me right now?
This episode of the Leadership Vision Podcast revisits a conversation first recorded at the end of 2019—long before the world experienced massive disruption. While the context has changed, the conviction behind the conversation has not: well-being is foundational to leadership.
Well-being is dynamic, Not Defined Once
One of the most important ideas we explore is that well-being does not have a single, universal definition. It’s not a checklist or a trend.
Instead, well-being is dynamic, contextual, and deeply personal. It shifts based on season of life, responsibility, relationships, and leadership demands.
Rather than locking ourselves into rigid categories, we approach wellbeing as wholeness—a lived experience of alignment across physical, relational, emotional, and cognitive health.
Context Matters—but Some Values Remain
While well-being is shaped by context, some values consistently surface in healthy leadership cultures:
- Courage
- Vulnerability
- Boundaries
- Integrity
- Generosity
- Mindfulness and awareness
Which of these matters most may change, but all contribute to sustainable leadership over time.
Wellbeing Shapes Influence
Leaders often underestimate the impact of their personal well-being on their professional influence. Ignoring wellbeing doesn’t just lead to burnout—it reduces presence, strains relationships, and limits long-term capacity.
Healthy leadership begins internally before it shows up externally.
Practiced, Not Perfected
Wellbeing isn’t static, and it’s never “finished.” Practices that once served you may need to evolve. Recognizing that change isn’t failure—it’s growth.
The work of leadership is not just about doing more. It’s about becoming more aware.
A Simple Starting Point
If you’re not sure where to begin, start with a conversation:
- What does wellbeing mean to you right now?
- When do you experience it?
- With whom?
- How do you know when it’s present—or missing?
Leadership doesn’t begin with action alone.
It begins with awareness.
As 2026 unfolds, we hope that leaders choose wholeness over hustle and create cultures where people don’t just perform—but truly thrive.
