Three Quotes from Unfolded That Invite Deeper Reflection

What if a single sentence could change how you see yourself, your courage, or your dreams?
In this episode of the Leadership Vision Podcast, I chat with Dr. Linda and Brian Schubring, authors of Unfolded: Lessons in Transformation from an Origami Crane, to explore three simple yet powerful quotes from the book. These are quotes that have really jumped out to me after reading the book several times now.
Rather than discussing the entire story, we focus on a few lines that continue to spark new insights each time they’re read.
1. “Healing begins by accepting ourselves just as we are.”
This quote opens a thoughtful conversation about self-acceptance and the difference between healing and striving.
Brian reflects on how many of us want to accept ourselves only after we’ve improved, grown, or fixed what’s broken. But true healing begins when we’re willing to honestly ask, “How am I right now?” and accept the answer.
Linda adds that healing isn’t a quick fix. It’s often a slow process that requires embracing the whole of who we are—not just the parts we like.
For me, it’s always a reminder that healing is different than improving, and it’s ok to just be, and not always feel like one needs to be in a constant state of striving.
2. “You have the courage. Why not try?”
Why do so many people wait for courage before taking action?
According to Brian and Linda, courage rarely arrives as perfect confidence. Instead, courage is often found in small moments: speaking up, trying something new, acknowledging fear, or taking a step forward despite uncertainty.
As Linda shares, courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s moving forward with heart even when fear is present. This is a great reminder for all of us as we move into whatever it is that is coming “next” for us in life and leadership.
3. “For your dream to grow, you will need to let go.”
The final quote explores the relationship between dreams, expectations, and growth.
Sometimes the very things we’re holding onto—our plans, assumptions, or rigid expectations—can limit what a dream might become. Growth often requires open hands, a willingness to adapt, and trust that dreams have a life of their own.
As the conversation unfolds, I (Nathan) reflect on how expectations can become “dream inhibitors,” preventing us from seeing possibilities we never imagined. Sometimes, it’s our ability to let go of those expectations, and however unrealistic they may be, that can lead to greater growth and happiness.
Which Season Are You In?
As the episode concludes, Brian offers a simple but powerful reflection: there is a time for healing, a time for courage, and a time for dreams to grow.
The question is not whether all three are important. The question is which one your current season is asking of you.
If you’re navigating change, pursuing a dream, or learning to accept yourself more fully, this conversation offers thoughtful insights and practical wisdom for the journey.
