What Does Your Team Need Right Now?

Uncertainty has a way of exposing what is already happening inside a team. Leadership through uncertainty requires paying attention to those signals and understanding what your people actually need. When the path ahead feels clear, teams can often operate around small disconnects, unanswered questions, or disengaged employees. But when circumstances change, those cracks become harder to ignore.

The challenge for leaders is knowing what actually needs attention.

At Leadership Vision, we’ve found it helpful to look at four areas: Clarity, Alignment, Resilience, and Engagement. We call this CARE.

Clarity

When uncertainty increases, clarity often decreases.

People start wondering: What are we doing? What matters most? What should I be focusing on?

Leaders don’t need to have every answer. But they do need to help people distinguish what is known from what is unknown—and identify what deserves attention right now.

Alignment

A team can have tremendous talent and still struggle because people are moving in different directions.

Alignment asks whether people understand the larger purpose, whether priorities are shared, and whether individual effort is actually contributing to the same outcome. We’ve talked about this ideas a lot in the past (remember the flamingos?). It’s less about all doing that exactly same thing, and more about going in a same, or similar, direction.

Resilience

Resilience isn’t simply the ability to endure more.

It is the confidence that individuals and teams can draw on what is already within them—their experience, talent, relationships, and capacity—to navigate what they cannot predict. Think about how in Unfolded, OC learned that she already had what she needed to become a plane.

Engagement

Engagement is often treated as something leaders need to generate through better meetings, communication, incentives, or culture initiatives.

But meaningful engagement also starts internally.

Are people connected to their work? Do they understand what matters to them? Are they able to bring their ideas, hopes, talents, and energy into what they are doing?

Before trying to make people more engaged from the outside, leaders may need to create space for people to reconnect with themselves.

A Question for Your Team

We don’t think CARE is a four-step process. Most teams probably aren’t struggling equally in all four areas anyway. The more useful question is figuring out where your team is stuck right now.

So instead of asking, “How do we fix our team?” try asking:

What does our team need more of right now: clarity, alignment, resilience, or engagement?

Then get specific.

What would greater clarity actually look like? Where are we misaligned? What capabilities have we forgotten we possess? Where have people begun to disconnect?

You may not be able to eliminate the uncertainty surrounding your team.

But you can become much more intentional about how you lead through it.
